Carbon Gold, the UK market leader in biochar based garden products, is spending more than £500,000 in 2012 to support the marketing of its two composts and a soil conditioner.

The company, launched by Green & Blacks confectionery founder Craig Sams in 2008, produces ‘peatless’ peat All-Purpose and Seed Compost and GroChar soil conditioner. It will invest the money in a range of marketing activities including above and below the line support, point-of-sale merchandisers, shows and exhibitions and online promotions.

The marketing support package for the three GroChar branded products will, Sams and his colleagues believe, clearly position them as the product of choice with discerning gardeners searching for an alternative to peat based composts.

“This year we have invested extensively in professional, independent growing trials and our Seed and All-Purpose composts both performed as well and, in many cases far better, than peat based competitors. The Holy Grail of horticulture is to find a viable alternative to using peat. We have achieved this,” explained Craig Sams.

“The lignin content from coir allied to the carbon in biochar is a close horticultural profile to natural peat. It is ‘peatless’ peat. The growing trials show that it works. We have cracked the problem. We are spending more than half a million pounds which demonstrates to our retail partners our absolute commitment.”

All three products are Soil Association approved and are ready for immediate delivery anywhere in the UK. Using them will help gardeners to improve their personal carbon footprint.
