Westland Horticulture is warning all gardeners to be on their guard against aphids, after one of the biggest swarms descended on Worcestershire residents last Saturday (13th June) resulting in many homeowners running for cover.

Young plants including roses and greenhouse crops are extremely vulnerable as the pear-shaped, soft bodied, insects, commonly known as greenfly, or blackfly, feed off plant sap causing serious growth problems.   After feeding they leave behind toxic saliva that can cause distortion or discolouration on leaves.

Jamie Robinson, technical director for Westland Horticulture, said: “I saw one of the largest aphid flights in years and people in Worcester were running for cover and brushing aphids off as clouds of them descended on Saturday evening.”

Westland recommends using Bug Attack spray, which kills on contact and protects plants for up to six weeks. The spray can be used on all ornamentals and prevents damaging colonies establishing.
